Representing Culture and Language in Children’s Literature - SEPTEMBER 11
I will share my journey after adopting our youngest child in 2008 to connect her to birth country and culture in Ethiopia. This journey led to the founding of OHBD in 2016. Since that time, OHBD has become the world's largest publisher of bilingual kids' books featuring African languages and stories. My talk will focus on my learnings from an accidental social entrepreneur and mom's perspective about the key inputs needed to impact positively impact literacy which also supports culture and language preservation, inclusion, local capacity building, and more. My hope is that this talk will inspire others to identify key actions they can take immediately within their role or community.
Ellenore Angelidis is the founder of Open Hearts Big Dreams Fund, the largest publisher of bilingual children’s books featuring African stories and languages in the world. She is a lawyer by training and was a long time Amazon executive who became an accidental social entrepreneur at the urging of her youngest child.
