Immersion: Why and How?In this session, the presenter will discuss why Immersion education works and identify some best practices. If you are curious about Immersion, are thinking about starting your own program, or would like to learn about strategies to improve your own Immersion program this session is for you.
Jane Ness Prince George's County Public Schools Using art to enhance L2 communicationIn this presentation I will use images of well known paintings by Frida Kahlo, Diego Velazquez and Pablo Picasso to show how art can be used in the FL classroom to promote communication skills and cultural comparisons. I will show slides of grammar and group speaking activities based upon each artist's best- known paintings.
Charmaine McMahon The Catholic University of America Writing in the World Languages ClassroomThis session will give participants ideas for writing activities for lower and intermediate levels. Some ideas are paper and pencil, but some ideas incorporate technology. Presented in English with examples in Spanish.
Jane Ness Prince George's County Public Schools Luces…Cámaras...¡Acción! -- Keep your students engaged and motivated in the language classroom through drama and theater.Using theater and drama in the language classroom provides students with an opportunity to engage the whole child -- body, voice, mind, and emotions -- and creates opportunities to incorporate cultural elements in the classroom. During this session, the presenter will share her experience using drama and theater in the classroom as a powerful learning medium. On this journey, students go beyond vocabulary to engage higher thinking skills, such as problem solving and interpretation -- crucial 21st century skills. Students use their creative abilities, bringing language to life!
An overview of the process and activities, including copies of short plays used in the presenter’s classroom, will be shared in this session. The workshop will be given in English with examples in Spanish, and is of interest primarily to elementary and middle school teachers, but the concepts can be applied in any language classroom. Using iPads for Interpersonal and Presentational tasks - A Flipgrid and Adobe Voice Workshop. This hands-on workshop explores the use two iPad apps, Flipgrid and Adobe Voice, to engage students in Presentational and Interpersonal modes tasks. Using digital tools, teachers can empower language learners by giving them a chance to collaborate with other language learners, create stories, narratives and conversational pieces that can be published and shared. iPads will be provided or BYOD. Tasks examples have been implemented for Novice to Intermediate levels with 7th and 8th grade Spanish students at The National Cathedral School in Washington, DC. and can be adapted to most, levels and ages. Luis Deocares, National Cathedral School Incorporating Culture through music and foodMusic and food are two of the most representative themes that can be used when introducing the cultural aspects in the World Language class. The presenter will demonstrate how effectively the incorporation of authentic materials related to these two topics increases the level of motivation and interest for Culture. And, at the same time, how it creates an excellent opportunity to bring meaningful situations to class where the target language can be practiced. This session will be conducted in English with examples in Spanish and it is aimed to teachers of all levels.

Georgetown Day School Learning Chinese through exploring the art of Chinese Calligraphy.Using brush calligraphy in a language classroom increases the engagement and also brings up interests of learning Chinese. This workshop includes a brief lesson plan of how to present calligraphy in a class, hands-on activity and results in the presenters’ classroom, will be shared in this session. This workshop will be given in English with examples in Chinese.
